HPE

Health and Physical Education (HPE) at Birali Steiner School supports the whole child, physically, socially, emotionally and cognitively. Through movement, play and purposeful physical activity, students develop fitness, coordination and confidence while also learning the essential interpersonal skills that help them thrive in school and in life. Our approach recognises that physical education is more than skill development: it fosters teamwork, communication, resilience and a foundational understanding of health and wellbeing. By integrating movement with awareness and connection, HPE at Birali nurtures a balanced, healthy and grounded sense of self.

Students typically start learning conventional sports activities such as skipping from Class 1 and up, cooperative team games, including soccer and half-court basketball in Upper Primary on to Netball and Hockey in High School.

Bothmer

At Birali Steiner School, Bothmer Gymnastics is a living movement practice that strengthens the body while awakening awareness, balance and inner presence. Developed within Steiner education, Bothmer is far more than physical exercise, it is a conscious exploration of space, posture and purposeful movement that harmonises body, mind and soul.

Through structured running, jumping, balancing, throwing and spatial forms, students engage with the geometry of space and the body’s own geometry. Movements are precise yet expansive, cultivating strength, coordination and agility while also fostering courage, focus and quiet confidence. As students learn to orient themselves in space, they also begin to find orientation within themselves.

This intentional movement work also supports cognitive development. By crossing midlines, refining coordination and strengthening spatial awareness, Bothmer nurtures healthy neural pathways in the brain, laying strong foundations for concentration, memory and learning across the curriculum.

Bothmer meets each developmental stage with care. Younger children experience rhythm, joy and grounded coordination; older students refine discipline, spatial awareness and inner steadiness through increasingly complex forms.

Practised both individually and in groups, Bothmer nurtures cooperation, respect and leadership. Moving together builds connection, a shared rhythm that strengthens community and deepens belonging.

Bothmer Gymnastics supports healthy physical development while nurturing self-awareness and presence. It offers young people not only strength and balance, but a centredness they carry into sport, study and life beyond the school gates.
