Music Programme

Music holds a vital place in Steiner education and is a key component of the Steiner pedagogy. At Birali Steiner School, our music curriculum begins in the Pippi Room (Prep) with the singing of simple pentatonic songs. This early introduction to music helps children develop their vocal skills and encourages them to imitate the careful singing of their teachers. Every note sung and rhythm clapped lays the groundwork for a lifelong appreciation of music.

As children progress to Class 1 and 2, they continue to enhance their vocal abilities and are introduced to the pentatonic recorder. In Class 3, they learn the diatonic recorder and embark on the Strings Program, beginning with violin lessons. Starting in Class 4 and beyond, students deepen their violin skills and some may also learn to play the cello within the strings program.

In addition to string instruments, students explore a diverse range of other instruments, including marimba, xylophone, ukulele, guitar, djembe drums, and piano. From Class 7 onwards, the school offers various instruments as elective programs, allowing students to further pursue their musical interests.

Strings Programme

All students at Birali Steiner School learn to play a Violin from Class 3.

Students are taught in small groups that are held every week. Lessons cover technique and repertoire, and children are encouraged to practise at home to progress.

The school offers a junior strings ensemble and strings orchestra. Rehearsals for both the junior strings ensemble and strings orchestra are conducted weekly during school hours.

Benefits of Strings training for children are well researched and include focused concentration, increased mental health and social/emotional enhancement.
